How Your CSA Score Affects Your Trucking Insurance Rates in Texas

What truckers need to know about CSA scores, insurance pricing, and how to keep both in check

If you run trucks in Texas, your CSA score is doing more than catching the eye of FMCSA inspectors — it's quietly shaping what you pay for insurance. Carriers pull these scores when they quote you, and a few rough inspections can be the difference between an affordable renewal and a painful one. Here's how it works and what you can do about it.

What a CSA Score Actually Is

CSA stands for Compliance, Safety, Accountability — the FMCSA's system for measuring how safely a carrier operates. Your record is tracked across seven categories called BASICs: Unsafe Driving, Hours of Service Compliance, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazardous Materials Compliance, and the Crash Indicator. Roadside inspections, violations, and crashes all feed these scores, and most of that data stays on your record for 24 months.

Why Insurance Carriers Care

To an underwriter, your CSA score is a preview of future claims. High Unsafe Driving or Vehicle Maintenance numbers signal you're more likely to have a wreck — and a costlier one. Many trucking insurers now pull SAFER and CSA data automatically when they rate a policy. Strong scores can unlock better pricing and more carrier options; weak scores can mean surcharges, restricted markets, or an outright decline.

The BASICs That Move Your Premium Most

Not every category carries the same weight. Underwriters tend to focus on Unsafe Driving (speeding, lane violations, following too closely), Hours of Service (fatigue-related risk), and Vehicle Maintenance (brakes, tires, lights). The Crash Indicator matters too, but those first three are the ones you have the most day-to-day control over — and the ones that show up fastest in your rates.

How to Improve Your Score and Your Rate

The good news: CSA scores are fixable. A few habits pay off at renewal time:

  • Run pre-trip and post-trip inspections every day. Most Vehicle Maintenance violations are catchable with a flashlight and five minutes.
  • Stay on top of your ELD and Hours of Service logs. Clean logs keep that BASIC low and keep disputes simple.
  • Use the DataQs system to challenge bad data. If a violation was recorded in error or assigned to the wrong carrier, dispute it — corrections improve your score.
  • Coach drivers on the violations that matter most. A single speeding ticket can outweigh months of clean miles.
  • Keep your MCS-150 and registration current. Administrative gaps invite extra scrutiny.
