Texas Auto Insurance Rates in 2026: What DFW Drivers Need to Know
Nate Mclaughlin • April 3, 2026

Car Insurance Rates Might Be Heading Lower

If you’ve been watching your auto insurance bill creep up year after year, you’re not alone. Texas drivers have seen some of the steepest rate increases in the country over the past five years. But there’s finally some good news heading into 2026.

The Good News: Rate Increases Are Slowing Down

After years of double-digit premium hikes, the pace of auto insurance increases in Texas is finally slowing. Industry forecasts suggest rates may rise only about 0.3% in 2026 — a dramatic change from the 23% spike drivers saw in 2023 and the roughly 15% increase in 2024.

That said, the average cost of car insurance in Texas is still sitting around $2,500 per year (about $209 per month), which puts the Lone Star State well above the national average.

Why Were Texas Rates So High in the First Place?

Between 2020 and 2025, Texas saw auto insurance rates climb by roughly 61% — the largest increase of any state in the country. Several factors drove that surge.

Severe weather plays a major role. Texas leads the nation in hail damage claims, and the DFW metroplex sits right in the heart of hail country. Storm damage to vehicles drives up claims costs, which eventually gets passed along to drivers through higher premiums.

Vehicle theft is another factor. Texas has the second-highest rate of auto theft in the country, and stolen vehicles mean more claims for insurance companies to pay.

Repair costs have also jumped significantly. The average cost to repair a vehicle after a collision has risen sharply thanks to more complex technology in modern cars — sensors, cameras, and advanced safety systems all cost more to replace.

Finally, Texas has one of the highest percentages of uninsured drivers in the nation (around 14%), which drives up costs for everyone who does carry coverage.

What DFW Drivers Should Do Right Now

Even with rates stabilizing, now is actually the best time to shop your auto insurance. Here’s why: when rates were spiking, many carriers were raising prices across the board. Now that the market is settling, different carriers are competing more aggressively for good drivers.

Review your current coverage. When was the last time you actually looked at what you’re paying versus what you’re getting? Many drivers are still on policies that were repriced during the 2023–2024 surge but haven’t been adjusted back down.

Check your discounts. Bundling home and auto, having a clean driving record, completing a defensive driving course, and even your credit score can significantly impact your rate. Many people qualify for discounts they’re not getting.

Consider your deductibles. If you’ve been carrying a $250 deductible on comprehensive coverage, bumping it to $500 or $1,000 could save you hundreds per year — especially if you have an emergency fund to cover the difference.

Don’t skip uninsured motorist coverage. With 14% of Texas drivers carrying no insurance, UM/UIM coverage is one of the most important protections you can have. Texas law requires your insurer to offer it, and it’s usually very affordable relative to the protection it provides.

Shop multiple carriers. This is where an independent agent really shines. Instead of calling five different companies yourself, an independent agency can compare rates across multiple carriers in one conversation.

Texas Minimum Requirements vs. What You Actually Need

Texas law requires minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25 — that’s $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. But here’s the reality: those minimums haven’t changed in years, and they often aren’t enough to cover a serious accident.

Consider this: the average new car costs over $48,000. If you cause an accident and total someone’s vehicle, $25,000 in property damage coverage won’t come close. You’d be personally responsible for the difference.

Most insurance professionals recommend at least 100/300/100 in liability coverage, plus comprehensive and collision if your vehicle is worth more than a few thousand dollars.

Special Considerations for DFW Drivers

Living in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex comes with unique insurance considerations. The area’s heavy traffic means more accidents, hail season (March through June) means more comprehensive claims, and vehicle theft rates in urban DFW are higher than the state average.

If you commute on I-35, I-20, or the 635 loop, your risk profile is different from someone driving country roads in Wise County. Make sure your coverage reflects your actual driving patterns and exposure.

The Bottom Line

Texas auto insurance rates are stabilizing in 2026, but that doesn’t mean you should just accept whatever your current carrier is charging. The market shift actually creates an opportunity to save — especially if you haven’t shopped your policy in the last year or two.
